FAQs

Why rowing?

  • Designed to push you to your limits whilst also embedding you in a community, Rowing is a sport like no other. Not only will you see improvements in technique and fitness, but you'll also make friendships for life: there's nothing quite like bonding over an early morning wake up! With the opportunities to race at a national level including events like BUCS Regatta, Head of the River Race, Henley Royal Regatta, but also on our own stretch, The Itchen, there is something for everyone!

  • For more information, please contact us on instagram or get in touch with your prospective captain!

Do I need previous experience?

  • Due to the established learn-to-row at SUBC, no experience is needed. Whether you're used to playing different sports at school, or you've never been involved in team sports before, our training programmes are designed to gradually improve technique and fitness.

Where do you train?

What does the training plan look like?

  • Senior squads

In Southampton, the river is tidal so we have limited time we can spend on the water each week. When we have the tide we will train in the mornings before lectures and we will be on the water at least twice over the weekend.

Land training includes different variations of ergs (rowing machine workouts), and coached strength and conditioning sessions.

  • Novice squads

Our novice squads centre around introducing people to rowing and building up ability and fitness on and off the water. At first, there is a focus on learning good technique and making sure the whole squad can row before we start building up the training intensity.

How will I get to rowing?

  • Living in University accommodation means a free bus pass (woohoo): the U1A will take you to Wessex Lane halls, from which it is just a short 5 minute walk to the  Boat Club.

  • If you have lovely friends in Senior squads, they may have cars and be willing to pick you up to take you to S&C at Wide Lane Sports Ground.

How often will I get to race?

  • We race throughout the year, throughout Autumn and Winter we compete in a number of head races culminating in the Head of the River Race on the Tideway. Moving into summer is when the Regatta season begins. Side by side racing starts at BUCS regatta and we compete in a number of other regattas including Metropolitan regatta, finishing the year at Henley Womens and Henley Royal Regatta.

How much will rowing cost?

  • Membership costs differ from year to year. Semester one and Semester two are paid separately.

Where can I buy my kit?

  • Each semester our Kit & Sponsorship Secretary will organise a Kit Order.
